👋Welcome to the Top Five, a weekly newsletter by Jed Byrne that demystifies Raleigh development. If a friend sent you this email, you can subscribe below!
Good morning!
Professional Update
A few weeks ago I started a new role as the Director of Business Development at Barnhill Building Group. I’ll be focusing on selling our construction services for private commercial projects across the Triangle and Eastern North Carolina! The photo below is a few years old, but it’s from the top of the tower crane at 400H, which we built.
Ignite
This week I had the chance to attend the annual Wake Tech Ignite event. Each time I learn more about Wake Tech I am inspired and grateful that we have such a fantastic college here in our back yards. If you’ve never taken the time to explore Wake Tech, in person or online, I highly recommend it.
Book Update
No update this week. I’m still working to get the covers finalized and hope to have that completed by the next time we speak!

On to the Top Five! ⤵️
1) It all has to go somewhere: Our landfill might be landfull (see what I did there) in the next 20 years. Check out this article to learn more about the landfill and what we might do next. If you want a deeper read on Raleigh infrastructure, including landfills, check out Scott Huler’s book On The Grid.
2) Walkable Cities: According to a recent study, moving to a more walkable city leads to about 1100 additional steps a day. Unfortunately, our state doesn’t represent well on walkable cities.
3) Omni Hotel: The 600-room (or 600-key in development speak) Omni Hotel in downtown Raleigh is now under construction.
4) Housing Map: It’s pretty amazing to see the stark contrast in construction timing across the United States. This map really highlights how new much of the growth we’ve experience in the southeastern US is.
5) New Downtown Shop: I haven’t been yet, but I can’t wait to check out The Newsagent’s and grab a cup of coffee and browse books!
